Fatmomakke & Stekenjokk – A magical place in Sweden's wilderness

On our journey through Lapland, we explore the historic Sami church village of Fatmomakke and drive along the spectacular Vildmarksvägen to the Stekenjokk Plateau —including breathtaking reindeer encounters! 🦌🚐

📍 Fatmomakke – The historic Sami village

Deep in the forests of Lapland lies Fatmomakke , one of Sweden's most important church villages . Since the 18th century , Sami and Swedish settlers have gathered here to celebrate common worship. But Fatmomakke was more than just a place of worship—it was an important meeting place for nomadic reindeer herders , who celebrated weddings, traded goods, and cultivated their culture here.

Today, visitors can stroll through the village , where numerous old Sami huts and wooden cabins still stand. Some are already dilapidated, while others are still used for special celebrations. The place has a very special atmosphere —it's almost as if you're walking through an open-air museum that's still alive.

🔥 Highlights of Fatmomakke: ✔️ Historic Sami huts and traditional wooden houses ✔️ Beautiful natural scenery in the heart of Lapland ✔️ Mystical atmosphere with a lot of history

🚐 On the Vildmarksvägen to Stekenjokk – experience reindeer up close!

After visiting Fatmomakke, we continue our journey along the famous Vildmarksvägen , one of Sweden's most spectacular roads. The section through the Stekenjokk Plateau leads through a barren, breathtaking landscape at an altitude of 876 meters .

And then what we had secretly hoped for happened: Suddenly, we found ourselves in the middle of a huge herd of reindeer! 🦌😍 The animals were grazing peacefully next to the road, crossing the lane serenely, and were barely disturbed by our motorhome.

💡 Good to know: The Sami use this region as a summer pasture for their reindeer . In winter, the herds move to lower, snow-free areas. Therefore, a reindeer encounter is quickly guaranteed here during the summer months!

🔥 Highlights of the Stekenjokk Plateau: ✔️ Spectacular scenery at a breathtaking 900 meters altitude ✔️ Experience wild reindeer up close 🦌 ✔️ One of Sweden's most beautiful roads
