Motorhome Trip Scotland Part 2: Seals at Loch Fleet | Eilean Donan Castle | Isle of Skye

A picture-perfect morning – with typical Scottish weather
After a wonderfully peaceful night in our camper, we wake up relaxed and in good spirits. Finally, no rain drumming on the roof! The Scottish weather isn't being too kind to us today – it's chilly, the sky is cloudy, but for us, that's just part of the experience.
We enjoy our cozy camper breakfast with a hot cup of coffee. These small rituals, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, are what true vanlife feels like to us.
As we plan the day, anticipation builds: Loch Ness is on the agenda today – and maybe we'll even encounter the legendary monster Nessie? Our actual destination is Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland's most famous castle ruins, picturesquely situated on the loch's shore.
Loch Ness – Mysticism, Nature, and a small disappointment
The drive along Loch Ness is breathtaking. To our right, the dark water of the loch; to our left, gentle hills and dense forests, continually dotted with yellow gorse. The atmosphere is mystical, almost a little mysterious – no wonder so many legends surround this place.
However, at Urquhart Castle, the day's first surprise awaits us: No entry without an online reservation!
Neither a parking spot for our motorhome nor a spontaneous tour through the ruins is possible. A bit of frustration sets in – but that's also part of traveling. We take it with humor, snap a souvenir photo, and decide to find a new destination.
Udale Bay – Sun, Serenity, and Industry on the Horizon
We head to Udale Bay, a place that completely surprises us. The sun suddenly breaks through the clouds, bathing the bay in a golden light. After the grey morning, it feels almost like a small gift.
What immediately catches our eye: The view across to Invergordon, where four huge oil rigs lie in the middle of the water – an odd, but fascinating contrast to the idyll on the shore.
Here, the day winds down wonderfully. We watch the seagulls glide on the wind, have another coffee in front of the camper, and simply enjoy the moment. After such an eventful day, we appreciate the quietness all the more.
The night is glorious – no rain, no storm, just the gentle sounds of nature.

Seals at Loch Fleet – a true natural wonder
The next morning, we set off full of energy. Our destination: Loch Fleet, a natural paradise especially known for its seals.
Upon arrival, we are thrilled – at low tide, seals are lying everywhere on the sandbanks, close together, sometimes dozing, sometimes looking curiously in our direction.
For Kirsten, it's a dream: With camera and telephoto lens, she manages to capture great shots, while I simply watch the animals fascinated.
Out of respect for the seals, we consciously avoid drone flights – the well-being of the animals always comes first for us.

We spend quite some time in this special place, enjoying the peace and feeling as if we are in the middle of a BBC nature documentary. Such moments are why we travel!
Enchanted Cemeteries & Shaggy Highland Calves
Scotland is a country full of history – and you can feel it around every corner. Along the way, we discover an old cemetery: moss-covered stones, overgrown walls, and weathered inscriptions tell tales of centuries past.
We take our time, walk among the gravestones, and let the special atmosphere sink in.

And then, a real road trip moment: By the roadside, we spot our first Highland calves! The small, fluffy cattle with their button eyes and shaggy coats look almost like plush toys. They stand curiously in the grass, undisturbed by us, and bring many photos and wide smiles to our faces.

Eilean Donan Castle – The Scottish Fairy Tale Castle
A highlight of our journey awaits: Eilean Donan Castle, the famous castle on the small island at the confluence of three lochs.
Even from a distance, the castle looks impressive – like something out of a fairy tale movie. No wonder "Highlander," "James Bond," and many other films were shot here!
We stroll across the stone bridge, enjoying the view of the water and the mountains in the background. Inside the castle, we delve deep into Scottish history: narrow stone staircases, suits of armor, old furniture, and even barrels labeled "Gunpowder."
Unfortunately, we are not allowed to film inside – but every room, every corner tells its own story.

We take our time, discovering new details constantly, and feel almost like time travelers.
Isle of Skye – Fog, Sheep, and the Feeling of Freedom
From Eilean Donan, we continue to the Isle of Skye. The landscape becomes even wilder, the mountains more rugged, and as we find our overnight spot, we are surrounded by sheep – and, typically Scottish, by dense fog.
The evening light bathes everything in a soft grey, the world falls silent, and we enjoy the feeling of truly having arrived here.
Such moments make vanlife so special for us: freedom, nature, and simply being in the here and now.
Conclusion & Outlook
Our second leg through Scotland was a real adventure – with small setbacks, moments of great joy, and a lot of genuine nature.
