Iceland Camper Roadtrip - Westfjords, Hvítserkur & Iceland's Quiet Side

After a beautiful night of Northern Lights, our journey through Iceland continues. We are slowly leaving the Westfjords and heading north with the camper van. Ahead of us lies a day of driving full of contrasts: lonely roads, vast landscapes, whales in the distance, a thoughtful moment in nature, and one of Iceland's most famous coastal spots – Hvítserkur.

This day shows us Iceland not only from its impressive and beautiful side, but also from its quiet, honest, and sometimes sad side. It is precisely such moments that make a road trip through Iceland so special.

Continuing through the Westfjords

After a peaceful night, we continue our journey through Iceland's Westfjords. This region feels different from many well-known places in the south of the island. Everything here is wider, emptier, and more pristine. The roads wind through rugged landscapes, past fjords, mountains, and secluded stretches of coastline.

Traveling by camper here means one thing above all: take your time. The distances are long, the roads are sometimes narrow, and you're constantly reminded that Iceland demands your attention. But that's exactly what makes this journey so special. You don't just drive from one destination to the next; you experience every kilometer consciously.

Again and again, we stop, look out over the sea, and enjoy this special tranquility. No heavy traffic, no hustle and bustle, no large crowds. Just Iceland, our camper, and this endless expanse.

Iceland's quiet, reflective side

Along the way, Iceland also shows us its sad side. We discover a stranded whale. A moment that immediately silences us. Seeing something like that is not easy. It reminds us that nature is not only beautiful, powerful, and impressive, but sometimes also harsh and difficult to comprehend.

Such moments are part of a journey through wild nature. Iceland is not a staged amusement park. Iceland is real. Here you experience beauty, power, weather, silence, and sometimes moments that make you reflective.

We stop briefly, acknowledge this moment, and then continue our journey. Not because we don't care, but because a journey continues. The impression, however, stays in our minds and accompanies us for quite a while.

Whales in the Distance

A little further on, the mood changes again. Out on the sea, we spot living whales. At first, they are just small movements in the distance, then we see the typical spouts above the water.

After the sad moment before, this encounter feels particularly special. We stop for quite a while and observe the animals in peace. They are not spectacular close-ups, but quiet moments in the distance. But that's exactly what fits this day.

Iceland often doesn't give you perfect moments at the push of a button. You have to wait, watch, and be patient. And sometimes, a brief glimpse of the sea is enough to experience something special.

Drive to Hvítserkur

Our route continues to Hvítserkur, a well-known basalt rock formation on Iceland's north coast. The journey there itself is a small adventure. The roads become quieter, the landscape more open, and eventually, it's a steep descent towards the coast.

The gravel road down briefly creates some tension. With a camper, you automatically think about whether you'll be able to get back up easily later. But it's precisely these small uncertainties that are part of a road trip through Iceland.

Once at the bottom, it quickly becomes clear why this place is so famous. The coast appears rugged, quiet, and powerful. Hvítserkur stands prominently in the water and, depending on the viewing angle, looks like an elephant, a troll, or a petrified figure from an old Icelandic saga.

The approximately 15-meter-high basalt formation is one of the most famous natural wonders of North Iceland. Wind, weather, and the power of the sea have shaped the rock over millennia. For many travelers, Hvítserkur is one of the most beautiful photo motifs in the country.

And again we see whales

At Hvítserkur, we are lucky again. Off the coast, we spot whales once more. Again, they are not directly in front of us, but clear enough to enjoy the moment.

It is precisely this mix that makes Iceland so special for us. You go to a well-known natural site and get an additional experience you hadn't even expected. The whales out on the water, the rugged coast, and the distinctive rock together create an atmosphere that you can't plan.

We stop, look out at the sea, and simply enjoy this moment. No stress, no quick check-off on a list. Just observe, marvel, and be grateful.

Hvítserkur & Coastal Atmosphere

Hvítserkur is one of the most famous natural landmarks in northern Iceland. The basalt formation rises out of the water and appears almost surreal. Many see an elephant in it, others a troll turned to stone.

The surroundings are particularly exciting. Depending on the weather, light, and water level, the atmosphere changes completely. Sometimes the place appears mystical, sometimes rugged, and sometimes simply quiet. It is precisely this coastal atmosphere that we particularly like.

For us, Hvítserkur is not a place you just photograph briefly and leave again. You should take some time here, observe the coast, and simply let the power of this landscape sink in.

                    

Grettislaug Campsite in Reykhólar

In the evening we reach Grettislaug Campsite. The campsite is very quiet, hardly anything is going on, and we are allowed to park in the middle of the meadow. After a long day of driving, this is exactly what we need.

We particularly like such places. No big hustle and bustle, no crowded facilities, but simply a quiet place where you can arrive. After all the impressions of the day, this calm feels really good.

We park the camper, let the day slowly wind down, and enjoy the special atmosphere. Especially in Iceland, such simple overnight spots are often exactly what makes a road trip with a camper van so wonderful.

                   

Faint Northern Lights to end the day

As darkness slowly falls, Iceland reveals its magical side once more. Faint Northern Lights appear in the sky. Not extremely strong, but clear enough to end this day in a special way.

After all the impressions – the long drive, the stranded whale, the whales in the sea, Hvítserkur, and the quiet coastal landscape – this light in the sky is a peaceful conclusion.

We stand in the middle of the meadow, look up, and end this travel day with a feeling of gratitude. Iceland is not always easy, but that's precisely why it leaves such a lasting impression.

                    

Our Conclusion on the Iceland Roadtrip

This travel day was not a classic highlight day with only beautiful pictures. It was a day full of contrasts. The Westfjords revealed themselves to be quiet, vast, and impressive, but also honest and thoughtful.

The stranded whale was a sad moment, while the whales in the distance were a small gift. Hvítserkur impressed with its unique coastal atmosphere, and the drive across the plateau once again showed why Iceland is a dream destination for campers and road trip enthusiasts.

For us, this day was special precisely because of this: it was real. Not perfect, not staged, but a piece of Iceland as you experience it on the road.
