The Westfjords are one of Iceland's most remote regions, and that's precisely what makes them so special. After impressive days on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, our journey takes us further northwest of the island. Ahead of us are rough roads, secluded coastlines, and a landscape that could hardly be wilder.
After just a few kilometers, we notice that the Westfjords are different. Everything moves a little slower here. The roads get rougher, the distances longer, and encounters with other travelers rarer. But in return, we find exactly what we love about Iceland: nature, tranquility, and real adventures.

Journey to the Westfjords
Today, a long day of driving is on the agenda. Our destination is the Westfjords – a region known for its solitude, spectacular landscapes, and often challenging roads.
Shortly after departure, it becomes clear that this route will demand a lot from us. We repeatedly drive over potholes and rough road sections. The camper van is shaken quite a bit, but precisely these roads are part of the Westfjords experience.
With every kilometer, the landscape becomes more impressive. Steep mountains meet deep fjords, and the sea accompanies us almost the entire way. There is hardly any traffic. Often, we are alone on the road for minutes, enjoying this incredible tranquility.

Stranded Ship by the Roadside
Along the way, we suddenly discover something unusual. A stranded ship lies directly by the roadside.
Of course, we make a short stop. The abandoned ship looks almost as if it has always been a part of this landscape. Such places are rare to find on a trip. They are not in any guidebooks, and that's precisely what makes a road trip through Iceland so special.
We take the opportunity for some photos and enjoy the special atmosphere of this abandoned place.
Relaxation in the Hot Tub
After many kilometers, we reach a hot tub in the middle of nature in the evening. Exactly what's needed after a long day on the Westfjords' roads.
While the fresh Icelandic air blows outside, we enjoy the warm water and let the day's impressions sink in. Such moments are among our most cherished travel memories.
Later, we find a spot for the night and look forward to the coming day.
New Day – On the Way to the Seal Lookout
The next morning, we continue our journey. Our destination is the well-known Seal Lookout.
Actually, we only expect a short detour. But as often happens in Iceland, everything turns out differently. The route leads along the coast, and after a short time, we keep spotting seals in the water.
This significantly extends our planned driving time. But that's exactly why we're here.
Seals Along the Coast
No sooner have we spotted the first seals than more follow. Again and again, the animals lie on rocks or swim directly offshore.
Of course, we stop repeatedly. Kirsten, in particular, is delighted with every new sighting, and the camera is constantly in use.
These encounters show us once again how rich Iceland's wildlife is. The animals seem completely relaxed and are hardly bothered by our presence.
Dynjandi – The King of the Westfjords
One of the biggest highlights of our trip through the Westfjords awaits us at Dynjandi waterfall.
We can recognize the mighty waterfall from afar. Unlike many other waterfalls in Iceland, Dynjandi does not simply plunge vertically into the depths. It spreads out in steps over the rocks, resembling a giant white veil.
The closer we get, the more impressive this place appears. The roar of the water grows louder, and the size of the waterfall becomes ever clearer.
Of course, the drone must not be missing. Only from the air does it become visible how massive Dynjandi truly is and how spectacularly it is embedded in the landscape of the Westfjords.
Weather Change in the Westfjords
No sooner have we finished our recordings than Iceland shows its typical side again.
Within a short time, dark clouds gather. The wind intensifies, and soon after, it begins to rain. The weather changes from pleasant to harsh within minutes.
Precisely these weather changes make Iceland so fascinating. No two days are alike, and you never know what awaits around the next bend.
Our First Whales in Iceland
On the way to our next destination, we suddenly spot several plumes of steam far out at sea.
After a brief observation, it becomes clear: there are whales swimming out there.
The animals are far away and only visible for a short time. Nevertheless, this moment is very special. They are our first whales on this trip, and this encounter alone makes the day unforgettable.
Seal Lookout – Seals & Pups
In the afternoon, we finally reach the Seal Lookout.
And the wait was worth it. Numerous seals lie on the rocks, and we even spot some pups in the water.
We spend quite some time observing the animals. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed. No noise, no crowds – just nature and wildlife.

Northern Lights to End the Day
As darkness slowly sets in, Iceland has one last surprise in store for us.
Suddenly, Northern Lights appear above us. Slowly, the green curtains drift across the sky, providing a perfect end to this special day.
After all the experiences, we just stand there and enjoy the moment. Such moments are unforgettable.
Our Conclusion on the Westfjords
The Westfjords show us Iceland from a side that many visitors never experience. Fewer tourists, more nature, and incredible tranquility characterize this region.
Dynjandi waterfall, the many seals along the coast, our first whales, and the Northern Lights in the evening make this part of our journey a true highlight.
Anyone who wants to experience Iceland off the beaten path should definitely plan enough time for the Westfjords. For us, they are already among the most beautiful regions of the entire island.
